In the fast pace of modern life, we rarely pause for Reflection on the Past or consider how far we have truly come. At times, we cling to old memories, forgetting that dwelling too deeply on them can quietly steal moments from our future. Yet the past carries immense value—it teaches, guides, and refines us. As I crossed the milestone age of fifty, I felt a strong urge to look back with gratitude and clarity. This journey to Madurai and Kodaikanal became my way of reconnecting with childhood memories, familiar neighbourhoods, and the places that once shaped my identity.

Rediscovering My Past in Madurai and Kodaikanal: A Journey to My Roots

The first half of life demands that we build careers, relationships, stability, and purpose. But after fifty, something shifts. We begin thinking about legacy—what values we pass on, how we influence others, and what remains after us. With this mindset, I planned a meaningful journey to revive emotions buried beneath decades of responsibility.

At 5:00 a.m., I started my drive in my Thar along NH 45, the April heat greeting me like an old memory. After crossing Tindivanam, a simple cup of traditional filter coffee grounded me in comfort, stirring anticipation for the nostalgic days ahead.

Arriving in Madurai: Revisiting the City That Raised Me

The five-hour Chennai–Trichy stretch felt effortless, delivering me to Madurai with 45 minutes to spare before picking up my friend from the airport. After living in Madurai for 25 years, witnessing Avaniyapuram transform into a quaint town felt surreal.

Our stay at The Heritage near Kochadai—a 100-acre property once used by British officers of Madura Coats—felt like stepping into history. The stone buildings, vintage furniture, and spacious rooms, especially the bathroom with its ceiling fan, radiated quiet charm.

A hearty lunch at Kumar Mess followed. Even on a Tuesday, the crowd surprised us, but dishes like brain fry, crab flesh, and mutton chukka more than justified the wait.

Then came the emotional moment—returning to Harvey Nagar, my childhood neighbourhood. The tiny old house stood unchanged even after 35 years. My school, smaller now and with fewer trees, still carried the echoes of my childhood. The nostalgia washed over me like a forgotten melody.

Rediscovering My Past in Madurai and Kodaikanal Through Childhood Memories

The next morning, we began our ascent to Kodaikanal—“The Queen of Hills.” After breakfast in a small rural eatery near Batlagundu, we continued the scenic drive. Kodai’s unique charm lies in its fewer hairpin bends, thanks to British engineering brilliance.

Our hotel beside the prestigious Kodaikanal International School offered a breathtaking view of the star-shaped lake. The cobbled paths, vibrant flowers, and crisp mountain air instantly energised my spirit.

After a flavourful lamb curry and naan lunch, we rested before taking an evening stroll around the 4.8 km lake circuit. As the sun dipped, Kodai glowed in warm tones, awakening memories of my first-ever trip here with Regi.

Day 2: Exploring Nature and Finding Peace

Our plan to visit Berijam Lake was halted by forest officials because elephants had been spotted nearby. Nature had its own agenda.

Instead, we visited:

  • Pine Forest – majestic, towering trees creating a cathedral-like calm
  • Guna Caves – twisted roots and enchanting terrain
  • Pillar Rocks – appearing and vanishing with moving clouds
  • Saleth Matha Church – offering a panoramic view and quiet reverence

Vattakanal: The Soulful Trek Beneath the Clouds

Known as “Little Israel,” Vattakanal attracts traveler’s seeking tranquility and raw beauty. The trek to Dolphin’s Nose tested our endurance with uneven terrain and giant rocks, but every step reminded me why this journey of rediscovering my past in Madurai and Kodaikanal was so important. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Csfe0Q0A1ae/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng%3D%3D

The return climb was tough, yet inspiring—especially watching older hikers determined to experience nature’s embrace. The rest of the day was spent replenishing energy for the next chapter of our adventure.

Sirumalai: An Offbeat Retreat of Untouched Beauty

Our final destination, Sirumalai, 40 km from Dindigul, https://www.instagram.com/reel/CryTehpgC6F/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng%3D%3D offered breathtaking views from its 18-hairpin bends. From the 3rd and 5th bends, we marvelled at panoramic vistas of Dindigul town and the famous Rock Fort. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Crr_Mk9A7eB/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng%3D%3D

After settling into our modest stay at Sirumalai Palaiyur, a sudden downpour welcomed us. Hot bajji and tea became the perfect companions to the weather. A friendly Labrador joined us during our walk, adding warmth to the moment—until leeches reminded us we were deep in nature’s territory.

Sirumalai, known for its special bananas that were once part of Palani Panchamirtham, revealed endless hills, vibrant wildflowers, and serene trails. It felt like stepping into another era—quiet, pure, and profoundly grounding.

Returning Home: A Heart Full of Gratitude

As the reality of returning to Chennai set in, a gentle sadness emerged. But it was overshadowed by gratitude—gratitude for the laughter, food, landscapes, people, and memories that shaped this trip. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CtDfWcIg_qb/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng%3D%3D
