Planning a short Europe trip can feel overwhelming, but with smart routing and efficient transport, it’s entirely possible to experience two iconic cities in one journey. Our Amsterdam Paris 4-day itinerary began on 18 May 2012, when we flew from Chennai to Amsterdam, blending canals, culture, museums, tulip gardens, and a memorable day trip to Paris—all without feeling rushed.
Day 1: Arrival in Amsterdam, Canal Cruise, and City Nightlife

We landed at Schiphol Airport and immediately took a direct train to Amsterdam Centraal, one of the easiest airport-to-city transfers in Europe. From Centraal, we made our way to the American Amsterdam Hotel at Leidseplein, a fantastic base for exploring the city on foot.
To make travel seamless, we purchased the Amsterdam City Card (48 hours), which covered public transport and museum entry—an excellent value for first-time visitors.
In the evening, we kicked off our trip with a canal cruise, the best introduction to Amsterdam. Gliding past historic canal houses, bridges, and houseboats offered a postcard-perfect view of the city.
After the cruise, we walked to Dam Square, soaking in the lively atmosphere, street performances, and illuminated landmarks. The night continued around Leidseplein, known for its vibrant nightlife. After dinner and a leisurely stroll, we returned to our hotel around 2:00 AM, happily exhausted.
Day 2: Old Amsterdam, De Wallen, and Anne Frank House

Day two focused on Amsterdam’s historic heart, with most attractions located within walking distance or a short tram ride.
We started at Oude Kerk (Old Church), the oldest building in Amsterdam, rich in history and character. From there, we walked through De Wallen (the Red Light District), experiencing its narrow lanes, canals, and historic architecture beyond its well-known reputation.
Next, we visited the Cannabis Museum, which provided cultural and historical context rather than just novelty. We then stopped at Magna Plaza, a stunning shopping mall housed in a former post office, admired for its architecture as much as its stores.
In the afternoon, we headed to the Anne Frank House, located in the nearby Jordaan district. Visiting it earlier in the trip allowed us to take time without the pressure of departure-day logistics. The experience was deeply moving and one of the most meaningful stops in Amsterdam. We ended the day with dinner at an Indian restaurant, a comforting and familiar close to a full day of exploration.
Day 3: Museum Quarter, Vondel park, and Heineken Experience

Day three stayed centered around the Museum Quarter, making it a relaxed and well-connected day.
We began at the Van Gogh Museum, where the artist’s life, struggles, and masterpieces came alive through powerful exhibits. Just steps away, we entered the Rijksmuseum, home to iconic works like The Night Watch and an extensive collection of Dutch art and history.
After the museums, we slowed the pace with a walk through Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s most famous green space. The park offered a refreshing contrast to the museum crowds and was conveniently close to our hotel.
Later, we visited the Heineken Experience, an interactive tour blending brand history, brewing, and entertainment. With everything nearby, the day felt balanced rather than exhausting.
Day 4: Keukenhof Gardens and Ajax Football Stadium

In the morning, we took a bus to Keukenhof, often called the world’s most spectacular spring garden. Visiting during the Amsterdam Tulip Festival was unforgettable. Endless fields of tulips, creative floral installations, and manicured landscapes made Keukenhof one of the trip’s highlights.
After returning to the city, we headed to the Johan Cruyff Arena, home of Ajax Football Club. For football fans, visiting the stadium added a unique sporting dimension to the itinerary. Grouping Keukenhof and the stadium on the same day helped keep museum days lighter and travel more efficient.
Day 5: Paris Day Trip by Thalys Train

One of the most exciting elements of our Amsterdam Paris 4-day itinerary was a day trip to Paris using the high-speed Thalys train. We left Amsterdam early in the morning and arrived in Paris in just a few hours.
To maximize our limited time, we joined an open hop-on, hop-off bus tour, which efficiently covered major landmarks. We visited the Eiffel Tower, admired the modern Louvre Pyramid, and walked through the elegant Jardin des Tuileries.
A relaxed stroll along the River Seine offered beautiful views and a chance to slow down amid the busy schedule. For lunch, we stopped at Kashmir House, where a plate of biryani felt both satisfying and familiar.
By late evening, we returned to Amsterdam by train, grateful for the convenience of European rail travel.
Final Evening and Departure
On our final day, we kept things light. We visited Madame Tussauds, explored a well-known Amsterdam coffee shop for the cultural experience, and spent some downtime packing and resting.
Soon after, we departed for Chennai via Frankfurt, reflecting on how much we had seen in just a few days.
Final Thoughts on This Amsterdam–Paris Trip

This journey proved that thoughtful planning makes all the difference. By grouping attractions by location, separating heavy museum days from long travel days, and using trains and trams efficiently, the trip felt enjoyable rather than rushed.
If you’re planning a short European escape, this Amsterdam Paris 4 day itinerary offers a well-balanced mix of culture, history, leisure, and iconic experiences—perfect for travelers who want to see more while moving smartly.
