In April 2024, my daughter and I planned a short yet fulfilling Sri Lanka getaway, starting from Chennai and covering the cultural heart of Kandy and the coastal charm of Colombo. This Kandy and Colombo 4-day itinerary from Chennai was carefully designed to balance heritage, nature, city life, and relaxation—without feeling rushed.

Sri Lanka’s close proximity to Chennai, warm hospitality, scenic landscapes, and excellent hotels made it an ideal destination for a parent–child trip.

Day 1: Chennai to Kandy – Hills, Heritage, and a Gentle Start

We began our journey with an early morning flight from Chennai to Colombo, allowing us to make the most of the day. After clearing immigration at Bandaranaike International Airport, we met our pre-booked private cab and immediately headed toward Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka.

The drive from Colombo to Kandy took about three hours, but it was far from tiring. Lush greenery, rolling hills, village scenes, and winding roads made the journey scenic and engaging. We took a short comfort break en route before continuing toward the hills.

On arrival, we checked into our hotel, a beautiful hillside property offering calm surroundings and panoramic views. After lunch and a short rest, we headed out for our first cultural experience.

In the evening, we visited the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). Experiencing the evening ceremony felt serene and meaningful, especially for my daughter, who found the atmosphere calming, fascinating, and memorable. From there, we took a peaceful walk around Kandy Lake, enjoying the cool breeze and city lights reflecting on the water.

We ended the day with a relaxed dinner near the hotel and returned early to rest after a travel-filled day.

Day 2: Exploring Kandy – Gardens, Tea, and Culture

Our second day in Kandy, therefore, centered on nature, learning, and slow exploration. After enjoying breakfast at our hotel, we then set out for the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and expansive green spaces. As we wandered through orchid houses, palms, bamboo groves, and open lawns, the experience felt refreshing and unhurried for us.

From there, we headed to a nearby tea factory, where we learned how Ceylon tea is produced, from leaf plucking to processing and packaging. The guided tour was informative and ended with a tasting session, making it both educational and enjoyable.

After lunch, we visited the International Buddhist Museum, where global exhibits on Buddhism allowed us to explore calmly and thoughtfully.

In the late afternoon, we drove up to Hanthana Mountain View Point, one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Kandy. The sweeping views of the city, surrounding hills, and tea plantations were breathtaking, especially in the softer evening light. It was a calm, memorable experience and a great alternative to a performance-based activity.

We returned to the hotel for dinner and enjoyed a quiet evening, appreciating the peaceful hill-town atmosphere of Kandy.

Day 3: Kandy to Colombo – From Hills to the Coast

After breakfast, we checked out from our hotel and began our drive back to Colombo. To make the journey more interesting for my daughter, we stopped at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage along the way.

Watching elephants being fed and bathed in the river was one of the highlights of the trip. It was both entertaining and educational, making the long drive feel rewarding.

We reached Colombo by afternoon and checked into our hotel a modern beachfront property with stunning ocean views. After lunch near Marine Drive, we returned to the hotel to rest and later prepared to enjoy the infinity pool on the 28th floor, taking in the views and sea breeze.

In the evening, we visited Lotus Tower, where panoramic city views and the vibrant surroundings created a lively and memorable atmosphere.

Afterwards, we headed to the Dutch Hospital Complex, enjoyed a live band performance during dinner, and then returned to the hotel for a restful night.

Day 4: Colombo City Tour, Shopping, and Departure

Our final day focused on exploring Colombo at a relaxed pace. After breakfast, we headed to Pettah for shopping, wandered through its bustling markets, and later enjoyed lunch at a small local restaurant, experiencing the city’s everyday charm and flavors.

Shopping was next on our list. We visited Odel for fashion and souvenirs, Barefoot for handicrafts and books, and One Galle Face Mall for modern shopping and cafés. These spots offered a good mix of local and international brands, making shopping both convenient and enjoyable.

We stayed overnight in Colombo and took our return flight to Chennai the next day at 11:00 am, bringing our short but memorable Sri Lanka trip to a close.
