A Long-Awaited Return to Puducherry

It has been almost four years since I last visited Pondicherry, now officially known as Puducherry, and this Pondicherry solo travel experience felt long overdue. I set out on this journey to reconnect with memories gathered over fifteen meaningful years. Many travelers return to this coastal town often, yet remain unaware of its deeper history and evolving identity. Originally called Puducheri, the name officially changed in 2006. Despite its calm, television-free spaces, Pondicherry remains digitally connected through Wi-Fi, offering a peaceful yet modern travel experience.

A Solo Drive Filled with Emotion

Puducherry feels deeply nostalgic, blending happiness with quiet sadness for me. This trip reminded me that my beloved partner was not beside me anymore. I made the decision impulsively and chose to drive solo. I skipped breakfast, packed essentials quickly, and ignited my Thar. The urge to travel outweighed careful planning that morning. I stopped at Sangeetha Restaurant for dosa and coffee along the way. The East Coast Road looked stunning under a gentle drizzle. The shoreline played hide-and-seek near Vadanemmeli as I drove forward.
Casuarina trees lifted my mood, and the Thar welcomed the unfolding adventure.

Day 1: Heritage Stay in White Town

Limited choices led me to Dumas Guest House in White Town. The property is over 100 years old and houses just six rooms. It sits beautifully on Rue Dumas, only 20 meters from the beach. French colonial buildings surround the guest house on all sides. Antique doors, vintage fittings, and abundant plants define its character.

It is the town’s fourth-oldest church, originally built in 1855 in Greco-Roman style under Napoleon III. Afterward, I walked to Mission Street for dinner at Café Xtasi, known for its no-frills, wood-fired veggie and meat-topped pies. Finally, I strolled back to the guest house and called it a day.

Day 2: Rain, Backwaters, and Paradise Beach

Rain welcomed me the next morning, typical for October in Puducherry. October to March remains the best season to visit this coastal town. I drove my Thar to Chunnambar Boat House after breakfast. I bought a round-trip ferry ticket costing Rs.345. The twenty-minute backwater ride to Paradise Beach felt magical. The route passed lush paddy fields, coconut groves, and quiet villages. Water lilies floated gently along the narrow waterways. Paradise Beach, felt calm and pristine. Golden sand, clear waters, and tropical silence defined the experience.

Located on the banks of the Chunnambar River and the Bay of Bengal, the backwaters are home to a larger ecosystem of aquatic life. In the narrow winding strip, numerous green escapades await a breathtaking sight for all on board. As you pass lush paddy fields and distant villages, you will see water lilies and dense coconut groves. An isolated beach in Pondicherry, Paradise Beach is considered one of the best tourist destinations. Locally referred to as ‘Plage Paradiso’, this breathtakingly beautiful golden sand beach has a tranquil atmosphere. The crystal-clear water and tropical vibe allow you to enjoy a relaxing day with your family and friends.

After spending 2 Hrs at Paradise beach, I wanted to check Eden beach in Chinna Veerampattinam, the first beach in the Union Territory to get the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ certification from the Denmark-based Foundation for Environment Education (FEE).

Lunch, Leisure, and Eden Beach

After returning, I drove back to town for lunch. I chose Villa Shanti, hidden behind a discreet façade in White Town. I selected an outdoor table and enjoyed the relaxed ambience. Lunch included beer, chicken kebab, and a Caesar salad. The flavors felt light, fresh, and satisfying. Later, I visited Eden Beach at Chinna Veerampattinam.
It is Puducherry’s first beach to earn Blue Flag certification. Clean shores and peaceful surroundings made it worth the visit. I returned to the guest house to rest briefly.

I walked back to the guest house to rest for a while and had plans to check some of the retail outlets on mission street. It was 6.00 pm, and I revoked my old memories and reached a place to pick up a few old navy shirts and a couple of O’Neill Boardshorts.

Auroville: Seeking Stillness and Meaning

In the evening, I decided to visit Auroville for peace. Located 15 kilometers away, Auroville offers quiet escape from city chaos. The township houses residents from 195 nationalities. Having visited earlier, I navigated the area with ease. However, the Visitor Centre felt quite crowded, so I chose to leave early. Instead, I settled beneath a giant banyan tree, where silence, greenery, and stillness enveloped me completely. As lunchtime approached, I enjoyed a simple mini-meal that tasted surprisingly delicious. Later, I wandered through nearby shops, exploring handmade products and natural crafts that reflected Auroville’s thoughtful spirit.

Later I decided to immerse myself in some retail therapy, for I love their handmade products such as soaps, incense, clothing, and accessories. The shops offer Natural health, arts & crafts, bath&body, clothing&accessories, food, homeware, home fragrances, books&stationeries. The cost is a little expensive, but you will not regret it.

Sound, Serenity, and Reflection

Accidentally, I arrived at Svaram, a center dedicated to sound exploration. nside, rare musical instruments revealed sound’s power and vibration. I played chimes, sound bridges, pulse tubes, and traditional instruments.
Each sound felt immersive, calming, and deeply engaging. The experience felt unique and unexpectedly moving.
Later, I relaxed near a beach with white sand and rocky stretches. The Bay of Bengal looked vast and peaceful.
I returned to the guest house after sunset. Dinner at Surguru Spot included idly and filter coffee, tasting heavenly.

It was time, and  I moved to Serenity beach after 10 minute’s drive to spend the evening. Serenity Beach is one of the beautiful beaches in Pondicherry.

A lovely sea landscape to sit a unwind and watch waves with energy unleashing their power after reaching the shore.

Serenity Beach Pondy

Serenity is apt as it displays tranquillity, calmness, cleanliness and a perfect getaway from the rush city. I relaxed and was mesmerized by the white sand beach on one side, and the rocky stretch on the other, and the bay of Bengal looked beautiful.

Serenity Beach Pondy

I captured a few memorable photographs before driving back to the guest house. After a refreshing bath, I walked to Surguru Spot Restaurant for dinner, where I enjoyed soft idlis and a classic filter coffee that tasted absolutely delightful. As I walked back to the guest house, I noticed the unique style of the doors in Pondy is a display of taste in architecture. https://www.instagram.com/p/CjipC4ZAGOm/

Pondy At Night

Day 4: A Farewell to Pondy

As I drove back home through familiar highways, the rain and traffic faded into the background of this Pondicherry solo travel experience. This journey reminded me why I keep returning—to slow down, reflect, and rediscover myself through familiar streets and changing skies. Pondy never promises perfection; instead, it offers presence and quiet reassurance. I know I will return again to this old town, carrying new memories gently layered over the old.
